Sanofi's new software collaboration brings a pharmaceutical business together with two technology partners. The announcement records an intended development programme, not a measured improvement in a medicine or a completed commercial product.
The partnership announced in May
Reuters reported on May 21, 2024 that Sanofi was collaborating with OpenAI and Formation Bio on artificial-intelligence tools for drug development.
The joint announcement assigns proprietary-data access to Sanofi, model capabilities and expertise to OpenAI, and engineering resources and a development platform to Formation Bio. The partners describe purpose-built software across the development lifecycle.
What would count as progress?
The practical distinction is between assembling capabilities and demonstrating an outcome. Having a dataset, a model and an engineering team does not itself measure time saved. A useful follow-up would name a specific task, the previous way of doing it and the result after the new workflow was introduced.
Three separate records
- A project record identifies the workflow, responsible team and implementation date.
- A performance record compares the same task before and after the change, including review time.
- A financial record separates development spending from any subsequently measured saving.
Consider a document-preparation task as an illustrative measurement problem, not a reported feature of this partnership. Counting only the time needed to produce a first draft would omit the time spent checking references and correcting errors. A faster first step could still leave the whole task unchanged if the review stage grows.
The same care applies to the scope of a conclusion. A result measured on one document type would not establish an improvement across every development programme. A later company update would be more informative if it specified the tested workload and the boundaries of its claim.
This corporate announcement is therefore a starting point for tracking implementation. Software efficiency and evidence about a medicine answer different questions; neither should be substituted for the other.
