NVIDIA reported a sharp increase in quarterly revenue, with data-centre business central to its results. This company ledger separates the completed reporting period from the outlook and from the economics of customers using its equipment.
Results for a defined period
The company announcement dated November 20, 2024 records revenue of $35.1 billion for the quarter ended October 27, up 94% year on year. The fiscal-year label is 2025 even though this quarter ended in calendar 2024.
Reuters reporting, republished by Investing.com, first published on November 20, put Data Center sales at $30.77 billion and the next-quarter revenue outlook at $37.5 billion, plus or minus 2%. The latter is an expectation, not another completed quarter.
What the numbers can tell a customer
A supplier's revenue is not a measurement of the useful work performed by every system its customers buy. For a procurement team, the important distinction is between the equipment transaction and the operating project. A purchase can be necessary for a project without being sufficient to deliver its intended service.
Keep the project milestones separate
- A contract establishes commercial commitments; it does not establish that a system is operating.
- Installation needs its own acceptance criteria, rather than an assumption based on a supplier's sales.
- Service usage and customer receipts belong in an operating review, not in a hardware supplier's revenue total.
These are reading principles, not claims that particular NVIDIA customers have missed a milestone. The reported numbers do not provide a project-by-project assessment of deployment or profitability. Nor should one issuer's sales be labelled the size of the entire AI market: that would require a defined market boundary and evidence covering other participants.
A clear boundary for follow-up
Subsequent comparisons should match the reporting period and the entity being measured. Adding a chip supplier's revenue to a customer's service revenue can count different transactions along the same chain rather than produce a meaningful measure of final demand. Conversely, a slower customer commissioning schedule does not, by itself, contradict a supplier's recorded sale. Each claim needs evidence at the stage where it arises.
The next-quarter outlook should therefore remain in a separate column from actual results. Replacing it with a later outcome would turn a dated announcement into hindsight. This account records the original announcement, not a recommendation about securities or a guarantee of returns from AI investment.
