IBM’s first-quarter figures show a changing business mix

IBM’s first-quarter results combine different divisional trends, while backlog, recognised revenue and cash flow remain separate measures.

IBM's first-quarter 2025 update combines a modest increase in group sales with different movements across its divisions. Reading those movements separately is more useful than treating the group growth rate as the experience of every business line.

Sales and the consulting backlog

Reuters reported on April 23, 2025 that quarterly revenue reached $14.5 billion, up 1%, while Consulting revenue declined 2%. The report also identified about $100 million in affected government contracts, less than 1% of the division's backlog.

A separate view of cash

IBM's earnings release records Software growth of 7% and Infrastructure contraction of 6%. Operating cash flow was $4.4 billion, against $2 billion in free cash flow. The company defines its generative-AI book of business using software transactional revenue, SaaS annual contract value and consulting signings; it is not a single recognised-revenue measure.

Keep the denominators visible

A useful internal comparison would place each division's revenue beside the same division and period a year earlier. Combining a consulting backlog percentage with a software revenue growth rate would not produce a meaningful group average. The underlying amounts and definitions would first have to be made comparable.

Cash also needs its own reconciliation. A reader can use the cash-flow statement to follow operating inflows, investing activity and distributions without assuming that accounting profit is immediately spendable money. This distinction is especially important when evaluating a company's capacity to fund acquisitions and dividends in the same reporting period.

These reading rules do not supply a new earnings forecast. They identify which questions the published figures can answer and which require additional contract or cash-flow detail.
